Furious shoppers have hit out at supermarkets after discovering that their turkeys had gone ‘rotten’ hours in the run up to Christmas Day.
Customers have shared images of their ‘rancid’ turkeys that they bought from Asda, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury’s .
They fumed to the supermarkets on X, formerly known as Twitter, with many saying that they checked their fridges to prepare for the big day to find that the main component of their festive meal had gone ‘slimy’ and ‘rancid’.
One user wrote: ‘Asda, Christmas Day officially ruined. Purchased this earlier and it’s rotten. It smells absolutely disgusting.
‘It’s shocking how you can sell something that’s rotten and then leave people worried where they are going to eat another turkey with limited time left.’
They then shared two images of their festive joint of meat, which had blotches of grey-coloured flesh on it.
The best before date was Boxing Day, however they posted the tweet yesterday evening and got it at a reduced price of £15.81 as opposed to £23.60.
Another user wrote: ‘@AldiUK Loving your Turkey crown which is rotten two days before its use by date.’
They had paid £13.60 for the turkey crown which had a best before date of 26 December.
A further Aldi customer penned: ‘@AldiUK Christmas ruined, thanks for the rotten turkey.
‘Research tells me that a fresh raw turkey only lasts two days so why are you selling them on the 19th with a best before date on the 28th?
‘Looks like we are having chicken on Christmas day.’
A Tesco shopper bought a £53 turkey from their local store a couple of days ago and complained to the retail giant that it had gone ‘rotten’.
They commented: ‘This is a bit of a blow. Bought a ‘fresh’ turkey from the local Tesco superstore a couple of days ago.
‘Just unwrapped it to prepare everything for tomorrow and it absolutely stinks. The meat is rotten. So… Christmas dinner? It’ll not be quite as we might’ve hoped.’
Another person launched a complaint with Sainsbury’s after they discovered their turkey had gone ‘rotten.’
They said: ‘Just went to prep the turkey crown for tomorrow and it’s rotten!!! Cheers Sainsbury’s.’
A second Sainsbury’s customer also took to the platform and said: ‘Just checked my turkey I brought on the 20th ( dated for the 27th!) and it is rancid and slimy! Nearly threw up from the smell of it! Absolutely disgusting!’
The supermarket recently faced criticism as a technical issue meant that people were unable to redeem their Nectar points on their Christmas shopping.
Shoppers hit out at Sainsbury’s on social media and some have said the problem has ‘wrecked their Christmas budget’.
Nectar is the loyalty scheme for Sainsbury’s stores and signing up means that you can earn points every time you shop.
Many customers save their Nectar points all year round in order to splash out on festive food such as tins of chocolates, turkeys and even gifts for others.
Several customers have said they were unable to claim hundreds of pounds worth of points, which has left them out of pocket.
One user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘Due to an error with your system, £90 of nectar points were NOT redeemed and this morning you charged my entire Christmas shop to my debit card.’
Another penned: ‘Sainsbury’s thank you for wrecking my Christmas budget. I redeemed £185 of nectar points to cover my Christmas shop, but they didn’t get credited.
‘Nectar spoke to Sainsbury’s who issued vouchers, but cannot use more than £99.99 on an order. So now have to find £100 extra cash.’
Asda, Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury’s were contacted by MailOnline for comment.
