According to ESPN, former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, 33 years old, is reportedly interested in joining Newcastle United after the news of Nick Pope’s potential absence for the next four months emerged earlier this week.
The media outlet was contacted by a source informing them that Spanish goalie De Gea, who has been without a club since leaving United at the end of the last season, would consider a contract offer from the Magpies if Newcastle decides to add him to their team to cover for Pope’s absence.
De Gea spent 12 years at Old Trafford, making 532 appearances across all competitions. He left the club after his contract expired last season with manager Erik ten Hag not keen on extending the Red Devils legend nor keeping him in tow, let alone playing him.
According to ESPN, the Spaniard has been training regularly and is ready to accept an offer if it aligns with his goals at this late point in his professional career.
Nick Pope, the Magpies GK1 until last Saturday, is set to undergo surgery for a dislocated shoulder injury sustained in the Premier League match against Manchester United of all teams last weekend. The injury is expected to keep Pope out for the next four to potentially five months, leaving a massive hole to fill in the Magpies goal.
Pope’s untimely injury occurred in the 83rd minute of the game, leading to his substitution in the 86th minute. Pope was replaced by long-time Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who will keep starting games for the remainder of Pope’s recovery or until the Mapies can reach a deal with De Gea or any other goalie to make up for Pope’s absence.
Newcastle face Everton, Tottenham, and Milan in December, and although NUFC could sign De Gea off the street right now the expectation is for the club to assess their options in the coming days and weeks before making a final decision on who—and whether or not—to sign as a Nick Pope replacement ahead of the January transfer window.
For the time being, manager Eddie Howe will have to do with the trio Martin Dubravka, Loris Karius, and Mark Gillespie as his choices for the goalkeeper role going forward.
