Formby descended into darkness this evening due to a mass power cut affecting the whole area.
The lights went out at homes and businesses across Formby shortly after 5pm, with power company SP Energy Networks saying it had had “no advance warning” of the black-out. A number of streets in Prenton, Wirral were also affected, including Bridle Close, Bidston Road, Shrewsbury Road, Kingsmeade Road South, and Prenton Road West, while there were also reports of problems in Knowsley.
The issues came as Storm Elin hit Merseyside, leading to fallen trees and rail delays as high winds hit the region.
In a post about the Formby incident, the SP Energy Network said: “Our control centre will attempt to reset the network remotely to restore power in stages, and we will also send our next available engineer to attend site. Our team will work to get your power back on as quickly and as safely as possible. Please speak with us if you are aware of any damage to the network or if this information does not apply to you. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

It has now announced when residents can expect to have their power back.
A spokesman said: “There is a power cut affecting the L37 and L38 postcode areas of Liverpool. We had no advance warning of this and first became aware of it at 5.29pm. Our engineers are enroute to find and fix the fault as quickly and as safely as possible. We expect your electricity supply to be restored by 7.30pm.”
The Met Office warned of potential power cuts as Storm Elin sweeps across the Merseyside area. Yellow weather warnings are in place warning of strong winds until 11.45pm, with potential delays to bus and train services, large waves and spray on coastal routes, and delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.
Knowsley Safari cancelled tonight’s festive event, Enchanted, due to bad weather being forecast, while Christmas shoppers in Liverpool city centre were forced brave the wind and rain.
