A number of flights due to arrive at Newcastle Airport on Wednesday night diverted while a “defect” in the runway was examined.
The flights involved included the Ryanair 8pm arrival from Krakow, a TUI flight that had been scheduled for 8.10pm in from Tenerife, Loganair flights from Aberdeen (which had been due at 8.35pm) and Southampton (which had been due at 8.50pm) and the 9.05pm TUI arrival from Paphos.
Further flights – from Bristol on Easyjet and Larnaca on jet2.com – were also affected by delays. The airport confirmed that the runway “defect” was inspected and the runway had re-opened by around 10pm.
Airport bosses apologised to those passengers affected. In a statement, an airport spokesperson said: “Our runway was closed for a short period this evening while a defect was inspected.
“This is now complete and the runway has been reopened. Unfortunately as a result, 5 flights opted to divert during the short closure. We apologise to any passengers affected.”
