Flash floods wreak havoc in Scots town amid yellow weather warnings across country

Extreme downpours following days of sunshine and warm spells have wreaked havoc in a Scots town amid yellow weather warnings from the Met Office.

Flash floods hit Eldon Street in Greenock transforming the main road through the town into a river as cars continued to drive through the deep water.

Shocking footage shows several vehicles struggling to navigate the flooding that gushed through the town leaving the road dangerously submerged.

And there will likely be more rain on the way.

A yellow weather warning was implemented from 3pm on May 12 till 3am on Monday warning locals that there could be flooding, disruption to travel and power cuts across Scotland.

The meteorologists also warned that fast-flowing or deep floodwaters could cause danger to life.

Edinburgh, Clackmannanshire, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Falkirk, Fife, Glasgow, Dumfries and Galloway, Argyll and Bute, among others, have all been issued a flood alert by the Met Office.

The forecast reads: “Heavy showers or longer spells of rain with a chance of thunder are expected through the evening. Showers will gradually ease and drift east through the early hours. Minimum temperature 11 degrees C.”
