Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Fail to Meet Expectations on PS5

Square Enix announced earlier this week that it will aggressively pursue a more multiformat-focused strategy, after its big PS5 console exclusives failed to meet expectations. According to Bloomberg journalist Takashi Mochizuki, sales of Final Fantasy 16 did open in line with the company’s targets – but its momentum has since slowed and it’s failed to meet its subsequent goals. A PC port is imminent, and the publisher hopes that will get the title back on track.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has also failed to meet expectations, although there’s no word on what its current sales numbers are and how far it is from Square Enix’s goals. And then there’s Foamstars, a title which was always likely to struggle, but has apparently missed the publishers targets as well. That one launched day one with PS Plus, and is still getting subsequent updates.

It should be noted that none of the games have necessarily flopped, they’ve just fallen short of expectations. It sounds like Square Enix’s response to this will be to release its titles on more platforms moving forwards, although it’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact the strategy has; naturally it’ll reach more consumers by launching on PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox, and PC all at the same time – but it’s probably fair to say its targets will also increase in the process.
