This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

The first half had just one shot on target, and the teams combined for just 0.34 xG (expected goals). Both Dyche and Pochettino will think this game is there for the taking if their sides can just find their feet in attack.

It has not been a thriller at Goodison Park, though Chelsea have probably just about shaded it, Fernandez forcing a decent save out of Pickford early on before the visitors dominated possession for large spells of the half. Harrison flashed a volley wide for the hosts, who did seem to be improving in the latter stages of the opening 45 minutes.

Cucurella goes down clutching his face after clashing with Tarkowski ahead of another Everton corner, though the referee sees no wrongdoing and issues no punishment.

Everton’s attempts to find a goal before the interval see them win a couple of corners in quick succession, though Chelsea are able to deal with them relatively easily.

A corner is cleared, but only to Gallagher. The midfielder whips a cross back into the Everton box, but though Badiashile wins the first header, none of his team-mates are there to meet the bouncing ball and the hosts clear.

Dyche is forced into another first-half change as Young limps off for Patterson. This has been a frustrating outing for the hosts so far.

Badiashile and Cucurella both breathe a big sigh of relief as they fail to deal with a long punt upfield. McNeil races onto it, but the ball gets caught under his feet before the flag eventually goes up for offside.

Mudryk injects a bit of much-needed pace into a Chelsea attack by flying down the left and getting past his man. He fires a cross into the middle, but Broja’s shot at the near post flies well wide of the target.
