Everton consider handing former Manchester United star a Premier League lifeline on short-term deal after he became a free agent in the summer… as Sean Dyche’s Toffees dig in for relegation scrap

Everton are thinking about giving a former Manchester United star another shot at Premier League football. 

The Toffees are in the market for cut-price options and the top-flight castaway, who was released from another club in the summer, could be an alluring option. 

Sean Dyche’s men have been plunged back into the thick of the relegation maul after three defeats on the bounce but must tread carefully due to Premier League spending rules, having already been hit with a ten-point ban. 

Everton could give the free agent, who has made almost 200 Premier League appearances for three different clubs and has also played 32 times for England, a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Jesse Lingard is on Everton’s radar and has been without a club since the summer

The player in question is Jesse Lingard.

Lingard was part of Nottingham Forest’s successful survival squad last campaign but flattered to deceive and was released after netting twice in 20 games. 

He had trials with Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia but a contract did not come to fruition and since then the 31-year-old has been training alone.

After an association with Manchester United spanning more than two decades, his Premier League career looked in tatters in 2020/21 when he fell out of favour and didn’t make a single league appearance in half a season.

However, a loan move to West Ham in the second half of that campaign reminded everybody of just how effective he can be,

He found the form of his career there, scoring nine goals in 16 games, but did not move to the London outfit permanently. 

That was three seasons ago, though, and Lingard will be keen to get back to his betst form quickly if any move to a club transpires.
