What’s happening with Ryanair and refunds?

A report by UK consumer website MoneySavingExpert.com says Ryanair barred passengers who received refunds for flights during the pandemic via their credit card companies. The flights weren’t cancelled, but customers requested ‘chargeback’ refunds, it reports, as they felt they could not travel due to Covid-related restrictions. Ryanair says fewer than 850 people are affected, millions who applied directly to it for refunds are not, and its T&Cs state that flights are only refundable if they do not go ahead, and that it can deny boarding to customers who have “recharged against us” for a previous flight.

Gourmet getaways from the GastroGays

Have you ever returned from a trip overseas, opened Instagram or Twitter, and seen a raft of recommendations you wish you’d known before you went? FOMO was one reason we asked the brilliant GastroGays to share a list of their Top 10 foodie breaks in Europe. The travel bloggers love getting to know places through their food and drink, and really put the research in – from ‘bikini’ sandwiches in Barcelona to the best of the wursts in Berlin. If you’re planning a gourmet getaway, tuck in!

A dog-friendly hotel review

The pandemic puppy boom has prompted a step-change in pet-friendly travel. With more people seeking to take their beloved animals on short breaks, Bairbre Power and her Yorkshire terrier, Romy, checked into Dunmore House in West Cork. Its five dog-friendly rooms come with small patio balconies and sea views (dogs are also welcome in the bar and lounge). You can read more pet-friendly travel tips in our Ruff Guide to Ireland, featuring 60 places to stay, eat and play with your pet.

Deals of the week

I wrote recently about possible price surges next summer. If you’re looking to book early, Irish Ferries today opened its summer 2022 bookings – you can book with a deposit of €200, and ‘Flexi fares’ allow for cancellations up to eight days before travel. TUI is also offering deposits from €75. If you’d prefer to get away sooner, what about Iceland? Northern Lights season is coming, and Travel Department has a three-night trip including Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle excursions from €769pp, including flights, tours, transfers and B&B. There are departures on November 25, December 2 and also next March.
