Elton John apologises to Gary Lineker for failing to pay his debt for more than two months, as he jokes: ‘With Christmas we were left a little short!’

Elton John has apologised to Gary Lineker on Monday after failing to settle a football bet for over two months.

The singer, 76, was forced to pay out on a private bet made between him and the sports broadcaster, 63.

Sir Elton is a big football fan and former chairman of Watford FC. He has been involved in the club since 1976.

Meanwhile Gary is publicly known as a huge Leicester City supporter after previously playing for the club and saving them from extinction.

And when the two sides came together earlier this season in the Championship the pair appear to have put money on the result.

Taking to Instagram, Gary shared a letter from the Rocket Man hitmaker along with the £10 note he had won.

He penned: ‘Never let it be said that Elton John doesn’t pay his debts. Leicester 2 Watford 0.’

Along with the money, Sir Elton wrote a short letter, it read: ‘Dear Gary, Sorry this is late! With Christmas we were left a little short! Have a great new year. It was so great to see you! Thank you. Love Elton.’

Back in November, Leicester, the current Championship leaders, won 2-0 against Watford after striker Jamie Vardy came off the bench to give his side the lead.

Vardy later scored a second goal from the penalty spot after being taken out by Hornets goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann – the Austrian being awarded a red card as a result.

Sir Elton recently praised the decision to rename a road after his iconic 1973 album as he visited it for the first time since the change.

The street runs along the side of Watford Football Club’s stadium, Vicarage Road, and was originally called Occupation Road.

However, a group of fans, The 1881 Movement, petitioned the council to rename the road in homage to Sir Elton and it was finally made official last month.

The street has been changed to Yellow Brick Road, as a nod to Sir Elton’s iconic album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and his recent Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour

New yellow signs have been put up to mark the official name change, with the singer proudly visiting this week.

Speaking about the renamed road, he gushed: ‘Using Yellow Brick Road is a really fantastic, clever way for supporters to have played their part in recognising a time when I was here pretty much every day – on this amazing journey with Graham Taylor [former Watford manager].

‘Along with the stand being named after me here at Vicarage Road, I feel very specially treated. And, even coming back here on a non-matchday, there’s still a buzz for me because this is where I fell in love with football and my club.

‘As I’ve said many times before, Watford Football Club has done more for me in my lifetime than I ever did for it.’
