“The supplement I’ve been taking every day for the past few years is taurine, an essential amino acid that plays a vital role in the body’s digestive, cardiovascular, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems,” he said.

“I’ve since noticed an improvement in my overall energy level, exercise performance and recovery time.”

Taurine deficiencies are thought to be a common driver of ageing, according to a new study led by researchers at Columbia University.

It found taurine supplements slow down the effects of ageing in tests involving mice, monkeys and worms.

It was even shown to extend the lifespan of middle-aged mice by up to 12 per cent, according to the study.

Dr Paulvin added the supplement can help to improve heart health – something that is impacted as we age.

It can help with blood pressure regulation and help maintain a good blood flow, reducing the risk of killer heart problems.

Taurine is shown to help with tissue repair and regeneration which is important as the body gets older.

The expert explained it can help repair DNA.

“One of the hallmarks of ageing is accumulated DNA damage, which can lead to mutations and an increased risk of cancer and other diseases,” he wrote for CNBC.

“Taurine exhibits DNA-protective capabilities due to its ability to scavenge harmful free radicals, while supporting DNA repair mechanisms that can reduce the occurrence of genetic mutations and contribute to overall cellular health.”

In a video posted on Instagram, he added stressed the importance of taurine.
