‘Destiny 2’ Servers Offline, Hammered By ‘Final Shape’ Player Logins

To the surprise of no one, Destiny 2 is having a bit of difficulty managing the enormous amount of people who are logging in to play its final Light and Darkness expansion, The Final Shape, which launched at 1 PM ET today at normal weekly reset time.

While players could pre-load the game over the past day or so, the obvious issue is not that, but attempting to get into the game. Currently, most players are not even in a queue to get in, as we sometimes see with launches like this. Thirty minutes after launch, the error message is that the servers are down altogether.

If you want to know what is causing the jam, look no further than the fact that Steam alone has 220,000 concurrent players with the servers offline, meaning everyone is just staring at the sign in screen they can’t get past. And that’s just Steam, to say nothing of the game’s console playerbase.

Those concurrent numbers are already the highest we’ve seen from the game since Lightfall, which was Destiny 2’s all-time PC peak with 316,000 players. With this many players sitting idly not even able to play, it seems pretty clear that record is going to get shattered, or that may have already happened by the time you read this.

As I recall, the Lightfall launch was actually pretty smooth, despite the high number of players. I remember thinking it might be ages to get in, but that wasn’t really the case. Here? I guess we’ll see, but the servers saying they’re off at this point in the error message is somewhat disconcerting. I am waiting for an official update from Bungie to be issued, if they do one. I’m sure they’re scrambling to get things online for everyone.

Check back here for updates about what’s happening with server and login status, and I will be updating things as they unfold throughout the day. Once you get in, there is not necessarily a guarantee everything will be smooth, as we’ve seen plenty of error code instances over the years that may crop up again. But I’m sure Bungie is doing everything it can, and we’ll just have to be a little patience.
