Dad slammed worker’s head into a fridge after son, 13, was denied energy drink

A short-tempered dad “saw red” when a shopkeeper refused to sell his 13-year-old son an energy drink.

Stephen Brown, 38, stormed into the off licence on Breeze Hill, Walton, and attacked the male staff member, slamming his head into a fridge and punching him in the face on September 25 2020. Brown, of Lorenzo Drive, Norris Green, had flown into a rage when he found out the man had refused to sell his child the caffeine-laden drink, which are commonly restricted to over-16s in shops.

He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday, November 2, where he pleaded guilty to assault causing grievous bodily harm.

Frances Wilmott, prosecuting, said the victim was working in the off licence shortly after midday when the boy came into the shop, picked up an energy drink and threw the money on the till. He tried to leave, but was stopped by the shopkeeper, who thought he was “eleven or twelve” years old.

The boy’s mother then came into the shop. The shopkeeper explained why he could not sell her son the drink, and the woman took the drink away from her son and was given back the money.

Ms Wilmott said: “Later, while the victim stood on the shop floor, the defendant (Brown) came into the shop, grabbed the victim by the back of the head, smashed his head into the fridge, and then punched him to the face. The victim moved to the back of the store and was followed by the defendant, who was shouting abuse.”
