A Covid summer wave warning has been issued – with Brits warned “it’s real and out there”. Cases of summer Covid have grown by more than a third in recent weeks, with 2,815 confirmed in England – an increase of 33.5 per cent – in the week leading up to June 19.
Covid hospitalisations increased by 23 per cent from the week before in mid-June, working out as 3.31 in every 100,000 people. And 146 people died with Covid-19 on their death certificate in the week up to June 14.
Prof Steve Griffin from Leeds University said: “This is clearly early days, but it certainly looks as though yet another Covid wave is building. If the rise in hospitalisations continues, this is obviously worrying.” Prof Paul Hunter, of the University of East Anglia, added: “To be honest, you can’t really avoid it because it’s so common.

“We are all of us going to get repeated Covid infections from birth through to death. Generally what we’ve seen is that over the last three years, four years, the severity of illness associated with Covid has gone down a lot. Ultimately, it’s going to become another cause of the common cold and, for many people, that’s what it is now.”
Warning Brits, one said: “Be careful out there, folks. Both my dad and I (separately from each other, hadn’t been in contact) got Covid for the first time this month. It’s out there doing its thing.” And a second said: “My mum and daughter have had it the past few weeks”
“We’ve all had something nasty. Sore throats and hacking coughs but Covid negative so who knows what germs are about,” a third said. “Five of my family have had it,” another said. And another said: “I’ve had it twice. First time was terrible lasted about 3wks. I totally felt worse than I’ve ever felt. Second time was nowhere near as bad as the first time. It only lasted a little over a week and felt like the flu. I was very thankful.”
And another wrote: “Same here!! I was so careful (and dare I say, proud) to not have had it before and then last weekend coming home from Florida I started feeling crappy. Tested positive a few days later.”
