Coronation Street star Chris Gascoyne reveals whether he’d return to Peter Barlow role

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Chris Gascoyne has revealed whether or not he’d return to the cobbles.

In scenes airing tonight (December 26) on ITV, Gascoyne’s long-running character Peter Barlow will leave the Street after having a heart-to-heart with his wife, Carla.

Addressing whether or not we’ll ever see Peter again, Gascoyne told BBC News: “Of course I’ve not ruled [a return] out, it’s been such a part of my life.”

“I’ve grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different, I’m not getting any younger,” the actor, who is currently starring in a panto production at The Alban Arena in St Albans, continued.

“The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I work with and I don’t just mean the actors. I’ve known all these people for nearly half my life.”

Last night’s (December 25) episode of the soap saw Carla gift Peter a one-way plane ticket, before encouraging him to go and join his friend who is travelling around the world on a boat.

“Going and living on a boat sounds wonderful and free but that’s not for her. That’s not how she sees her life, but it is what Peter wants to do,” Alison King, who plays Carla, recently explained.

“Carla knows that there could well be a chance that Peter could do that for a year like he has in the past.

“But she has to look at the bigger picture – it would mean potentially throwing everything away for her to go and do that. If she went and came back, what would be left for her here?”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
