Chelsea negotiating to hijack Tosin Adarabioyo from Newcastle

Chelsea FC are “in advanced talks” with Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo according to a report published by The Athletic on Saturday, June 1.

The Blues are attempting to beat Newcastle to the signature of the pending free agent, whose contract is set to expire on June 30. The Magpies were reportedly negotiating with the Fulham man before Chelsea, for reasons unknown, decided to mess around.

According to the report, Chelsea “have made an offer” and it’s believed “significant progress” has since been made trying to reach an agreement.

The authors confirm Newcastle’s interest in the pending free agent, adding Newcastle “were hopeful of convincing him to join.” Focus on that “were,” not “are,” which talks about the Magpies’ negotiations in the past tense in a rather worrying (or misinformed) way.

The report also mentions Newcastle “having also held discussions about signing him when Fulham were in the Championship,” confirming that Tosin’s release was agreed in April between the player and Fulham.

The decision to leave the capital club was entirely made by the center-back, who declined an extension offer by Fulham in recent weeks. He already had rejected a new contract during the 2022-23 campaign, according to the report.

Monaco seemingly submitted a couple of offers to sign the player for a fee last summer but Fulham turned those down. He also “received interest” from West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, per the authors.

Before joining Fulham, Tosin made eight first-team appearances for Man City. He would play for Enzo Maresca at Chelsea after his appointment as the new manager of the Blues earlier this week. It’s worth noting that Maresca was an assistant to Pep Guardiola not long ago.

Fulham signed Tosin for an initial £1.5 million fee rising to £2 million with add-ons as well as a 20 percent sell-on clause. During his time in London, he made 132 appearances. If he decides to sign with Chelsea, he will at least still be able to live in his current home. Alas.
