Chelsea defender Thiago Silva was caught using his phone behind the wheel of his car after being photographed on his wife’s Instagram story.
Silva and his partner, Belle, dined out for dinner just hours after he had scored during his club’s 4-0 victory against Preston in the FA Cup third round.
However, Belle inadvertently shared a picture of Silva looking at his brightly lit phone screen while in the driver’s seat – an act that breaks the law in the UK.
In the now-deleted social media post, Silva appeared to have pulled up to a red light and took the opportunity to briefly scroll through several pictures.
The short caption translated into English read: ‘Going to eat Japanese.’
It is unknown exactly where Silva, 39, was caught flouting road safety restrictions.
The government’s official website declares that it is illegal to hold and use a phone, or any device that can send or receive data, when driving a motor vehicle.
The law still applies if cars are stopped at red lights or queuing in traffic.
Drivers risk collecting six penalty points on their license and an additional £200 fine if they are caught holding and using a phone while in control of a car or motorbike.
Licenses can be stripped away if drivers have passed their test in the last two years.
Belle is a vocal supporter of her husband on social media and has taken pictures of Silva driving to and from games since his move to Stamford Bridge in 2020.
The pair are said to be childhood sweethearts and began dating in 2000.
They then married five years later and have two children, Isago and Iago.
Silva joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and has made 137 appearances across all competitions, winning several major trophies.
He has played 21 matches in total this season and scored twice.
