Supermarket giant Morrisons has recalled a cheese product over fears it contains dangerous bacteria that can cause meningitis.
The retail chain issued an urgent “do not eat” warning on its The Best Taleggio product via the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on Tuesday.
The recall was issued due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogenic bacteria, being found in some packs.
Symptoms caused by the bacteria include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea – similar to flu.
The infection can be more severe and cause serious complications such as meningitis in rare cases.
People over 65 years old, pregnant women and their unborn babies, children less than one month and immunocompromised people old can be more vulnerable to listeria infections.
Morrisons advised customers who purchased the 200g block to be used by April 14 not to eat it and return the product to the store it was bought in for a full refund.
A notice read: “Please do not eat this product and return it to your nearest store for a full refund.
“We don’t need a receipt.
“No other products are affected by this issue. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and assure customers of our continuing commitment to the highest standard of product quality and safety.”
