Gina Carano is reportedly suing Disney and Lucasfilm for discrimination and wrongful termination in a lawsuit.
In a complaint filed on Tuesday in California federal court, Carano alleges she was fired from TV series “The Mandalorian” over a social media post in which she compared being a Republican to being Jewish during the Holocaust.
Lucasfilm announced that Carano will not be returning to the hit series in 2021, the announcement coming after a long string of posts in which the former MMA fighter drew notice for her right-wing positions on various issues.
Carano seeks a court order that would force Lucasfilm to recast her along with at least $75,000 in punitive damages. In addition, Elon Musk’s X Corp is reportedly helping fund the suit – part of his promise to pay for legal actions taken by people claiming discrimination from posts to Twitter/X.
As Variety points out though, the posts in question originated on Carano’s Instagram Stories. X’s head of business operations Joe Benarroch says in a statement:
“As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.”
The complaint reportedly claims that Disney and Lucasfilm “made it clear that only one orthodoxy in thought, speech, or action was acceptable in their empire, and that those who dared to question or failed to fully comply would not be tolerated”.
Carano also reportedly argues Disney turning a blind eye to her male costars like Pedro Pascal and Mark Hamill who made political statements on social media with “no financial or professional repercussions”.
