A British tourist, believed to be 30 years old, has been stabbed to death in an early morning incident outside the popular Oxygen nightclub in Calella, Spain
A British tourist has been stabbed to death in a late night fight outside Spain’s Oxygen nightclub in the popular tourist resort of Calella – 30 miles outside Barcelona.
Catalan Police say the incident occurred at around 5am on Friday, and reports claim the victim had been involved with fellow tourists outside the club in the early hours.
He died at the scene., and no arrests have been made but an urgent murder investigation has been launched. It is believed a second person was also injured and is now in hospital.
Mossos d’Esquadra – Catalonia’s police force – are leading the investigation. An official police statement read: “This morning there was a fight in a nightclub in the city.
“The result of the incident is one dead and one injured, who has been taken to a hospital. The attack was by knife.”
Authorities have reportedly been in contact with the British Consulate to help inform the victim’s next of kin and to begin work to repatriate the body to the UK. An appeal has also been put out for anyone who may have witnessed the altercation – in an area very popular with tourists of multiple nationalities – to come forward.
Images taken from the scene this morning show a “significant” police presence with a large area of pavement around the nightclub still taped off by authorities. A number of ambulances could also be seen outside the venue earlier this morning.
Calella is a popular tourist destination in Spain’s Maresme region – not far from Barcelona.
