An 81-year-old man has been arrested following a collision that left another man with serious injuries. The injured man was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car as he crossed a main road in Gorton.
Officers cordoned off Hyde Road (A57) in both directions after the collision on Monday (January 1), which is thought to have happened at around 4.55pm as the man was attempting to cross the road.
Within the large cordon, the red Vauxhall Corsa involved was also pictured parked on the kerb outside the Waggon and Horses pub with police tape surrounding it, as officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out enquires at the scene late into the evening.

The landlord of the Waggon and Horses, Ian Booth, said the venue’s CCTV captured the moment the man was struck by the vehicle. He said the man was walking across the road towards the pub when he was hit by a car travelling towards Hyde.
“The guy was coming across the road when this car has come and just sideswiped him. It looked like he might be coming in here. Obviously we don’t want anyone to get knocked down, but I hope it’s not one of our regulars,” he said.
“This road is a nightmare. There’s been a few people killed. We’ve been trying to get a zebra crossing but they’re not interested. I don’t know how many people need to be hurt before something gets done about it.”
Those same concerns were echoed by residents living nearby, who branded the busy main road ‘terrible’ and ‘dangerous’ following the collision. A homeowner said she witnessed a man being taken away in a stretcher from the scene.
One mum who lives along the stretch said: “I see people trying to cross this road and wish they wouldn’t. It’s so dangerous. We knew straight away that something had happened when the sound of traffic stopped. Whenever that happens, if it’s quiet, we know there’s been an accident.”
Another man, who lives on adjoining Far Lane, said he and his partner didn’t witness the collision but that Hyde Road is ‘absolutely terrible’. “I’ve had two cars written off just being parked outside,” he said. “If it’s not drunk drivers, it’s people speeding.”
A large police presence responded to the incident, including investigators who were placing evidence markers in the road and taking pictures of the scene. An 81-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Initial enquiries have suggested that the victim was walking on the north side of Hyde Road, walking towards Hyde, crossing the road before stopping in the central dividing lane.
At the same time, the Vauxhall Corsa is understood to have been travelling on Hyde Road towards Hyde before hitting the victim. The car was driven down the road before returning to the scene on the opposite side of the road.
GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and are keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, mobile phone footage from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.
