Bentley’s new £236k Continental GT is the ‘fastest underwater vehicle’

The new Bentley Continental GT Speed has broken a curious world record which sees it become the fastest underwater vehicle in history.

The latest offering from the British brand has been described as the “most powerful road going Bentley ever created”, with prices set to start from around £236,000.

The petrol-hybrid has an electric range of 50 miles, can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.1 seconds and has a staggering top speed of 208mph.

The new Bentley also comes with the unique title of setting the unofficial “underwater speed record” of 208mph or 335km/h.

The new Continental GT Speed set out to establish a new speed record which had not been formally attempted before.

With the help of the Norwegian highways authority (Statens Vegvesen) and the Norwegian police, the Bentley hybrid was to drive through the Ryfylke Tunnel in Rogaland County.

It is the longest subsea road tunnel at 8.9 miles, and the deepest tunnel of any kind in the world – descending to 292 metres below sea level.

From a standstill, the Continental GT Speed achieved a 208mph (335km/h) top speed in just 33 seconds – creating a new unofficial speed record for a car in a tunnel.

During testing and the final attempt, the Bentley was powered by renewable second-generation biofuel and charged using electricity from fully renewable sources.

Bentley said it would release more details and a behind-the-scenes film about the Underwater Speed Record project in due course.

The fourth-generation Continental GT Speed has been developed and will be manufactured at its headquarters in Crewe, where it employs around 4,000 people.

With a CO2 emissions output of just 29g/km, owners of the Continental GT Speed will be spared of expensive Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) costs, paying just £10.

However, since the car will likely be far more expensive than the £40,000 threshold, owners will be liable to pay the expensive car supplement, which will set them back a further £410 for the first five years of ownership.

A statement from the brand said: “The new Continental GT Speed redefines the definitive grand tourer.

“With its striking modern design, powerful stance and elegant lines, the fourth generation positions the car ahead of others in comfort, beautiful artisanal craftsmanship and personal choice.

“The spectacular new Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain delivers a revolutionary blend of extreme performance and effortless electric luxury, delivering an unforgettable driving experience every time.
