Joe Burrow is out for the remainder of the year after tearing a wrist ligament in the Cincinnati Bengals’ defeat by the Baltimore Ravens, coach Zac Taylor has confirmed.
The Bengals quarterback, who left Thursday night’s game in the second quarter, is set to undergo surgery after MRI tests confirmed a torn ligament.
Burrow’s evening in Baltimore came to an end shortly after he threw a touchdown pass to Joe Mixon that put Cincinnati 10-7 ahead.
A little while later, he tried a practice throw on the sideline and the ball slipped out of his hand, causing him to wince in pain and then head down the tunnel with a frustrated look on his face.
Taylor initially suggested the 26-year-old had sprained his wrist in the game, but an MRI has indicated the injury is worse than first feared.
‘He had an acute injury yesterday,’ the Bengals head coach said about Burrow on Friday.
‘Likely on a play, before his last one, where he tore a ligament in his wrist that will likely require surgery and require him to be out for the rest of the season.
‘We’re still gathering more information on that, but that seems to be where it’s heading right now.’
Burrow was 11 of 17 for 101 yards and a touchdown when he left the game in Baltimore. Backup Jake Browning replaced him with the Bengals down 14-10. Burrow was back on the sideline as halftime ended but did not return to the game when Cincinnati started the third quarter with the ball. He was ruled out around then.
Replays shown on the broadcast seemed to show Burrow’s hand swollen up significantly.
Earlier in the day, he was seen getting off the team airplane wearing some kind of wrist brace.
That was also seen via video from a WCPO – which showed Burrow entering the stadium with a brace.
The NFL are reportedly investigating the Bengals over why he was not listed on their injury report going into Thursday Night Football.
Cincinnati removed social media posts from Wednesday night hinting that Burrow was dealing with the injury before the game.
A deleted video showed Burrow exiting the team bus in Baltimore while wearing a black sleeve/brace on his throwing hand.
