A Queensland father and primary school teacher is being remembered for his ‘vibrant spirit’ after he died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday.
Mario Collavino, 60, was described as one of the ‘most beloved teachers’ at St Rita’s Catholic Primary School in Victoria Point, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Mr Collavino, a former police officer who once served in the Australian Army, leaves behind his wife of 15 years, Shanine, and his four children, Danielle, Antonio, Luca and Arianna.
He previously worked as a sports teacher at Rivermount College.
Family friend James Greig created a GoFundMe to help cover Mr Collavino’s funeral.
‘On October 30, we unexpectedly lost a beloved father, husband, teacher and friend,’ Mr Greig wrote.
‘Mario’s vibrant spirit and love for his family and all the children he taught were evident to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
‘He leaves behind his loving wife, Shanine, and his four beautiful children, Danielle, Antonio, Luca and Arianna.’
Mr Greig said the funds would also be used to help support Mr Collavino’s family while they grieve his death.
‘During this time of immense grief, we are reaching out to friends and family to ask for your support in helping Shanine and the children navigate the financial burdens that come with losing a loved one,’ Mr Greig wrote.
‘All funds raised will go towards funeral expenses and ensuring that his younger children Antonio, Luca and Arianna have the resources they need during this difficult time.
‘We understand that this is a challenging time for everyone, and any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.
‘Your support will not only ease the financial strain on Mario’s family but will also show them that they are not alone in their grief.’
A devastated parent called Mr Collavino one of St Rita’s ‘most beloved teachers’ and said a memorial had been set up for him at a nearby church.
‘We were all touched by his kindness, love and passion for teaching our children in such a fun and joyous way,’ she said.
‘There is a memorial space set up within the St Rita’s church for anyone who wants to pay their respects.
‘It is as comforting as it is heartbreaking to see the outpouring of love for Mr Collavino displayed in the children’s letters, drawings and prayers for him.
‘To the man who taught every single child at our school and gave us all so many happy memories, thank you and may you forever rest in peace.’
Several more parents of Mr Collavino’s students, as well as his friends and family, left kind words under the GoFundMe.
‘Mario will hold a special place in my heart. A positive, passionate teacher, colleague and friend. My he rest in peace,’ one person wrote.
‘Sending our deepest condolences to the Collavino family during this devastating time. On behalf of one of Mr Collavino’s former students, “Thank you for being such an amazing teacher. Rest in peace, Mr Collavino. You will be missed,”‘ another said.
Since the fundraiser was created on Wednesday, the GoFundMe for Mr Collavino’s family has raised more than $20,000.
His memorial service will be held on Friday, November 10, at Saint Stephen’s College in Coomera, on the Gold Coast.
