A BBC radio presenter has revealed they were rushed to hospital after a ‘terrifying’ accident at home.

Broadcaster Stephen Nolan was missing from his usual show on Friday, but rung in to tell listeners about the incident.

The 50-year-old Northern Irish presenter was being replaced by Chris Buckler on his Radio Ulster programme, when he was asked: ‘What have you done to yourself?’

Stephen explained: ‘I was trying to move 10 boxes of tiles that were standing against the cupboard and I didn’t realise how heavy tiles were so they all landed on my big toe.’

‘I am still alive!’ he added.

Chris jokingly replied: ‘There is a little bit of kind of reluctance to believe any of this inside your team this morning… because they don’t believe for a second that you actually do anything like physical manual labour.

‘You basically employ people to move things… so what have you been doing? Have you run out of men?’

Stephen laughed back: ‘Have I run out of men? There’s another front page story.

‘Last night I was on the ground with all of these tiles on top of me and I started thinking “My goodness, what have I done?”‘

Stephen went on to exclaim he was in A&E for six hours the previous night, adding: ‘There’s a wee sliver of bone that has broken off.’

‘It was terrifying, it really, really was,’ he continued, recalling how when he was lying on the ground with the tiles, he thought, ‘Is this it?’

Thankfully, Stephen was saved by someone coming to remove the tiles off him, before rushing to hospital.

He then joked he had only been trying to get into the cupboard for chocolate, but was now left with a bandage around his toe and having been in hospital all night.

Stephen had earlier shared a gruesome picture of his toe on social media, showing it cut and covered in blood.

He wrote: ‘Stephen has a sore big toe tonight . I need a man for this DIY malarkey. No more lifting tiles.’

He added in a separate post on X: ‘Today hasn’t been good. Massive pile of floor tiles which are not fitted yet standing up in boxes – I under estimated their weight & pulled them towards me to open a drawer they were leaning against.

‘They landed on my foot as I went crashing to the floor . Not a good look & my big toe is swelling !’

Fans rushed to the comments to share their supportive messages, with Mick writing: ‘Looks nasty, hope all is ok.’

‘How painful it looks! I hope it will not affect your airing of the Nolan Show,’ Masahiko added.

Michael wrote: ‘Wanted to wish the @StephenNolan toe a quick recovery. @csbuckler has stepped in to cover for the toe. Get well soon Stephen and rest the toe.’
