BBC Hairy Bikers star Si King was caught up in a cruel Instagram scam following the passing of his friend and co-star, Dave Myers. Soon after Dave’s death, a fake account was set up asking for money supposedly for Dave’s family.
The duo’s Instagram account warned their followers to not get duped.
The post read, “Hello everyone, it’s come to our attention that someone has set up a fake ‘Si King’ profile asking for donations for Dave’s family.”
“This is a scam so please avoid clicking on anything or giving out any personal information! Please block and report the page. We are aware of the situation and are working to get it resolved. The HB team.”
Dave Myers, from Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, shared with fans that he had cancer in May 2022. Dave chose to keep private which type of cancer he had.
After Dave passed away aged 66, Si Said: “All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing. His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own.”
“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”
Dave’s wife expressed her gratitude to his fans for the “massive wave of love, compassion and care that you have shown towards me”. Liliana Orzac, who Dave met while filming Hairy Bikers in Romania, was with him, along with Si, when he passed away “peacefully” at home on February 28.
She shared a message on the Hairy Bikers Instagram page: “I will never be able to thank you all enough for the massive wave of love, compassion and care that you have shown towards me, Simon and our families in these past days since Dave passed.”
“I want you all to know that I have read every single message and comment that you sent… your stories about Dave, your feelings you shared with me mean a lot and my heart is filled with gratitude and love. “It amazes me how many hearts he touched and how many people wanted to express their love for what Dave and Si have created for nearly 20 years. I know the Hairy Bikers have been part of your living rooms for such a long time and I feel your loss as much as you feel mine!
“An exceptional husband, wonderful stepdad, loyal friend and in his own words, a creator, never a follower. I feel I’m grieving with a whole nation… and this is something special. My wonderful Dave Lili Myers.”
The latest series from King and Myers, The Hairy Bikers Go West, is still being shown on BBC Two.
Apart from their travelogue series, Myers also took part in Strictly Come Dancing and they have published over 25 cookery books.
