ASUS ROG Ally successor most likely to launch this year, claims ASUS India VP

ASUS ROG ALLY 2 to arrive this year

The company would update their system two years after the first generation.

According to the interview with ASUS India Vice President for Consumer and Gaming PC, Arnold Su, the company is ‘likely’ to launch a second generation of the gaming handheld this year. In a short quote provided by Techlusive, the company representative says that the next generation of Ally will focus more on gaming, rather than Windows 11 features, presumably this refers to the gaming software.

“We most likely will launch a second generation [handheld gaming console] this year. We will still keep the Windows features, but we will focus more on gaming,”

— Arnold Su, ASUS India

Arnold further confirmed that in India alone, the company has shipped over 70K units, with most of these users being early adopters. No official figures are known for other countries, but given that this was the first high-end Windows handheld on the market, ASUS is probably pleased with the sales of the first generation handheld.

The fact that ASUS is working on a second generation device should not be a surprise to anyone. MSI, who just announced their Claw console, said they are working on 2nd, 3rd and even 4th generation of the Claw, even though the first version hasn’t been released yet.

It’s too early to say what hardware the next-generation ROG Ally could have, but this information seems to match what AMD has planned for 2024, which is the Strix Point APU series. Not only it would have more cores (4x Zen5+ 8x Zen5c) but also more GPU power thanks to 16 CU RDNA3.5 graphics subsystem.

AMD plans for the 2025 APUs also include Kraken Point, considered an update to Phoenix2. As we know, the current Ryzen Z1 series are based on Phoenix1 and 2. So while the Phoenix1 is likely to be replaced by Strix1, the budget-oriented APU would fall on Kraken APU. In this case that would also be a considerable upgrade from 6 cores (2x Zen4 & 4xZen4c) to 8 cores (4xZen5 & 4x Zen5c). More importantly, this APU will have twice as many GPU cores.
