In an update this afternoon, Merseyside Police said officers had arrested a 49-year-old man from the Southport area. A car had also been recovered.

The man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision and failing to report a road traffic collision. He is currently in custody.

A spokesperson for the force said an investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Officers are also continuing to appeal for anyone who was driving along Northway at around 6.55am this morning to check their dash cam to see if they captured the crash or the movements of a Skoda Octavia either before or afterwards.
