One advantage “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” seemingly had over the other DC film releases this year is that the first film was a massive hit internationally, pulling nearly triple its domestic haul from overseas markets.
So while the new sequel is headed for a soft $43 million domestic opening over the four-day holiday, the movie has already grossed $41 million internationally and is expected to take in $70 million overseas by Christmas day.
That puts the film’s worldwide box-office opening at around $110 million – a number that doesn’t sound all that bad until you realise even “The Flash” managed to debut to $139 million globally.
In fact, the number is looking to be right on par with the worldwide debut of “The Marvels” which made $110 million in its global opening weekend last month before plunging and ending its run with a dismal $205 million.
The film has also pulled in a disappointing B CinemaScore from audiences compared to the A- of the first.
Meanwhile, the $125 million-budgeted “Wonka” musical hit the $216 million worldwide mark on Friday and is looking to be potentially heading towards a profit in the coming weeks. Domestically, it’s looking likely to hit $30 million for the four-day.
“Migration” is headed for third with $18 million followed by “Anyone But You” with $9 million. A24’s “The Iron Claw” is set to perform quite strongly with $7.8 million in sixth place – it also nabbed the studio’s top CinemaScore ever with an A-.
