Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has reportedly been discussing a potential move to Liverpool with team-mates on England duty, and is expecting a deal to his boyhood club to be completed
Anthony Gordon reportedly pushed for a move to Liverpool and even discussed the move to his England colleagues.
The Newcastle winger was subject to interest from his boyhood club earlier this month following the Magpies’ struggles to adhere to PSR rules that forced the club to solve their deficit in order to escape a potential points deduction. Newcastle ultimately balanced their books with other deals before the start of July.
But Gordon – who is currently on England duty at Euro 2024 – wanted the move to Liverpool after just a year and a half at St James’ Park and was openly discussing it with his international team-mates, according to Telegraph Sport.
The former Everton talent appears keen on a switch to Anfield, and time will tell if a deal can be agreed with Arne Slot’s side.
Despite the insistence of the 23-year-old’s agent who tried to broker a move, Liverpool were reportedly half-hearted in their attempts to sign Gordon, considering an official bid hadn’t been made. Meanwhile, discussions regarding numbers were too low for Newcastle to make a dent in their PSR deficit.
The club questioned the seriousness of Liverpool’s interest in signing the winger, suggesting their intrigue in the England international was opportunistic due to Newcastle’s financial deficit, which has since been resolved due to the departures of Yankuba Minteh (£33million) and Elliot Anderson (£35million) to Brighton and Nottingham Forest, respectively.
Having been named Newcastle’s player of the season this past campaign, the Premier League club would not entertain selling him on the cheap. And while his future at the moment lies in the North East, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will return for the player later on in the transfer window. When Gordon returns to Newcastle, the club will look to make sure he’s settled.
Gordon has made just one appearance at the Euros this summer in what was a one-minute cameo in the 0-0 draw against Slovenia. The services of the pacy winger has been called on by many fans who’ve suggested Gordon start ahead of Phil Foden on the left flank due to his directness and danger he causes in his favoured position.
