A city centre pub will be sorely missed by locals once it is transformed into a cocktail bar next month.
The ECHO reported on Monday that the William Gladstone pub on North John Street, across the road from Mathew Street, will be closed until next month as it’s being turned into a ‘Be At One’ cocktail bar. People across the city had mixed opinions as they reacted to the news of the pub’s transformation.
ECHO reader, CyclingMartial, was among those who shared their disappointment at the pub’s closure. They wrote: “This was my favourite pub, what a waste of money transforming it into something nobody asked for.”

Another commenter, kirkbygirl, said: “Another good pub bites the dust to become a trendy cocktail bar.”
Tagging his friends in the comments on Facebook, Vincent Baccino said: “Our pride day starter venue! X” Christine Banks also tagged one of her friends in the comments as she wrote: “One of our faves. xx”
Frank Nash said: “I liked the Gladstone but last time we went on a Friday it was empty. Two things we were gonna order were not available and when we did order they phoned downstairs to see if it was in stock.”
The landmark pub will soon become the second Be At One in the city, after the first opened on Seel Street in 2016. Be At One say their cocktail menu is “bursting at the seams with over 100 concoctions, offering everything from timeless classics to adventurous new creations”.
However, some readers believe another cocktail bar is not what is needed in the city centre. Writing on Facebook, Kevin Jones said: “Another cocktail bar which we don’t need”.
Cassie Laurence shared on Facebook in response to news: “Oh that’s such a shame. I love the willy glad. One of the few pubs in town I actually like.”
Tracey Roberts said: “Nooooo, love this pub as it is.”
