Ange Postecoglou press conference – Udogie and Porro ruled out, Jurgen Klopp replacement talk

Ange Postecoglou is holding his press conference on Friday afternoon to preview Tottenham’s Premier League match against Wolves on Saturday.

Currently fourth in the table after Aston Villa failed to register a win against Manchester United last Sunday, Spurs will be looking to strengthen their Champions League aspirations with another three points.

However, it won’t be a straightforward game at all with Gary O’Neil’s team faring well this campaign and picking up some notable results.

One of those came in early November against Tottenham, with the West Midlands club sealing victory following two stoppage-time goals.

Ahead of the Wolves match, Spurs fans will be desperate to know the latest in terms of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie’s fitness as both were not spotted in open training at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday morning.

Our Tottenham correspondent Rob Guest is among those putting the questions to Postecoglou. Scroll down for his latest updates from the press conference at Hotspur Way.

Every word from Ange

Ange on Romero and Van de Ven

Yeah it’s been really pleasing. As you said, centre-back partnerships most of the time, they tend to build together because you need so much understanding in a crucial part of the game where a lot of it is almost unspoken. You need to be able to understand each other’s game and I think they compliment each other really well.

I’ve been super-impressed with Romero this year – I already knew he was one of the best defenders in the world – but the way he’s tackled the whole leadership area, really become disciplined in his play and not just Micky but the other players, how he’s kind of really guiding them in the right way.

Especially Micky, and Micky I’ve already spoken about, the way he has adjusted to the Premier League has been outstanding. So it is great for those two. We missed them. Both during the middle part of the year so it is good to have them both back out there.

Ange on reports of him being on Liverpool’s shortlist to replace Klopp

I may be on a shortlist.” I don’t think I want to say anything about that because I don’t think that’s ever going to enter my brain space for what is my priorities in life and profession right now.

Ange on if he’s had to manage Bentancur’s expectations

No, I haven’t had to and I wouldn’t. It would be like someone trying to manage my expectations and I just don’t think that is my role. He sets very high standards and it is not just the absence. When he came back, I thought in the Villa game he was outstanding and then he gets a knock within 15 or 20 minutes and is out again.

It’s been disruptive even with the absence he’s had, but I’ve been really happy with Rodri. Again, I guess people look at it through the prism of players should be playing all the time and influential all the time, but we’re trying to build a squad here.

I’ve got no doubt that whatever Rodri does this year, and he’s already contributed, he’s creating a great foundation for us for next year. With the midfield set-up we’ve got at the moment, players we’ve got in there, it will be really exciting to see how they grow.

Ange on Brennan Johnson

Yeah really good. Again, Chris Davies has done a lot of work with the front half guys with Maso (Ryan Mason) and a lot of our work is around that, getting our wingers or our players into goalscoring positions. Again, it’s the way I’ve set my teams up for a very long time and he’s one that has understood that. It’s different from what he has done and it’s not easy. Trying to get that timing right and when you arrive, having a good technique and he has a great technique under pressure. He showed that last week and showed it the last couple of times. It becomes really difficult to stop when you get that synergy between our attacking players, so having a goal last week of winger to winger is good because they get rewarded for things we speak about and understand how important it is. And hopefully that keeps them looking for more growth.

Ange on if no Udogie and Porro will impact Spurs

It doesn’t change the way we play but I think I’ve said in the past a player brings their own sort of unique ability to each position. The structure won’t change and the way we set up won’t change but different players bring different attributes. Pedro and Destiny have been outstanding for us this year. Pedro has pretty much played every game apart from the first one where he didn’t start. Destiny every time he has been out there for us has been really important. They’re both improving but as I said they’re missing now and there will be an opportunity for a couple of other guys to come in and make sure we maintain the levels we’ve set so far.

Ange on Dragusin

He has been great, he working hard. He was at Genoa and he was playing. If just playing was all he was interested in then he would have stayed at Genoa. If you want to move to big clubs then that’s part of the process. He knew that and that’s why I wanted him here because he knew the challenge of coming here and playing was not just going to be a given.

It’s about working your way. He’s adapting. We play a lot differently to what he’s used to, we’ve used him in games and I think he’s done well when we’ve used him. Again, we didn’t buy him for six months, we brought him to this football club for a long time and we’ve already seen this year what losing our two central defenders what impact that had on our season. I don’t want that to happen in the future so Radu is here for that and the next three to four months before the end of the season it’s about him adapting and working hard.

He’s been outstanding in training, great attitude, great amongst the players. The players can really see the qualities he has and he’s ready to play.

Ange on injuries

Destiny picked up a knock last week and he’s not available for tomorrow. Don’t think it’s anything too serious. Pedro picked up a strain in training, probably a couple of weeks for him. With game break hopefully he doesn’t miss too many. Probably the major one for us is Fraser Forster. Fracture in his foot and he will probably miss a couple of months.

Devine’s Plymouth confession

Tottenham youngster Alfie Devine made his mark for Plymouth Argyle on Wednesday evening by having a role in both of their goals in the 2-2 draw with Coventry City.

Making the switch to Home Park in January after starting the campaign on loan with Port Vale in League One, the attacking midfielder has revealed that he was “quite disappointed” with his first three appearances for his new club.

However, his performance against Coventry has reassured him that he can make a big mark in the Championship.
