Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Cristian Romero has returned to group training ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Man Utd on Sunday evening. A key player for Spurs this season, the World Cup winner was substituted at half-time in last month’s 2-1 win over Everton after suffering a hamstring strain.
Set for a period of four-five weeks on the sidelines, Romero subsequently sat out the Premier League fixtures against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, as well as last Friday’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Burnley. Having seen Rodrigo Bentancur and Ryan Sessegnon return ahead of schedule recently, Romero could potentially be set to follow in the duo’s footsteps.
The news regarding the 25-year-old comes as a major boost to Spurs as they look to navigate their way through a tricky month without a number of key players. As well as speaking about Romero’s fitness, the head coach also revealed that Ben Davies looks set to miss a month of action with a hamstring injury and Giovani Lo Celso’s injury status will become much clearer next week.

Speaking to the media at Hotspur Way on Friday afternoon, Postecoglou said: “From the last game, Ben Davies came off with a hamstring issue. Probably looking for a month or so for him out. “Gio Lo Celso similarly – though harder to diagnose where he’s at at the moment. We’ll send him for further tests on Monday to see exactly what the issue is. He’ll miss this weekend.
“Dane Scarlett has picked up an injury as well in training so he’ll miss out. And that’s it really. Coming back… the only one that’s joined the main group today is Romero. And that’s it I think. Everyone else who’s injured is still training away from the main group.”
Asked if Romero is close to playing again, Postecoglou added: “He’s just started training so fair to say it might be a bit quick this weekend.”
Radu Dragusin looks set to be in contention to face Man Utd after completing a move from Genoa on Thursday evening. As the transfer is subject to international clearance and a work permit, Postecoglou is confident that the new signing will have his work permit in time for Sunday.
“Yeah, from what I’ve been told and it’s not my area, but from what I’ve been told we’re pretty confident he’ll be available for Sunday,” said the 58-year-old.
