If new information from a renowned leaker is true, AMD’s next gen Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 CPUs could be up to 40% faster than current Ryzen 7000 models. Despite a huge impending desktop processor war coming in late 2024, we have very few details of the specifications or performance of either AMD or Intel’s next gen processor performance , but according to a regular leaker, there could be a huge performance boost coming with AMD’s Ryzen 9000 Zen 5 models.
A post on Anandtech’s forums by well-known leaker Kepler_L2, reposted by Twitter user @3DCenter_org (via Videocardz) claims that Zen 5 cores will be up to 40 percent faster than the Zen 4 cores used in Ryzen 7000 processors such as the Ryzen 9 7950X.
The benchmarks referred to were from SPEC or the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation, which works to promote standardized benchmarks to evaluate the performance and efficiency of computer systems. This is a huge figure, that would get close to the massive performance improvement we saw moving to the first Ryzen processors back in 2017.
AMD has been on an upward performance trajectory since then and been more than a match for its rival, Intel, for the last couple of generations. It’s unclear, though, whether the 40 percent figure is an average or just one specific benchmark. Even so, this is a huge number that offers a tantalising glimpse into the performance benefits of AMD’s next generation Ryzen 9000 processors.
Owners of AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs have the added advantage later this year of being able to drop in the new CPUs to their existing systems with its new Socket AM5 platform definitely supporting its new range of Zen 5 models due to launch later in 2024. Intel, on the other hand, will be introducing a new CPU socket and CPU architecture so potential customers will have to buy new motherboards as well as the processors.
The new comes are there was good news for owners of AMD’s older Socket AM4 platform, with the company seeming to reveal plans to launch a new generation of Ryzen 5000XT processors on that socket. This could offer owners of Ryzen 1000, 2000 and 3000 processors a cheaper upgrade path. For those that must have the latest and fastest hardware, though, all eyes will be on AMD and Intel later in 2024 in what promises to be a close fight both in terms of price, performance and timescale.
Intel’s 15th Gen Arrow Lake processors are due to launch later in 2024 too, using the company’s new 20A process – equivalent to a 2nm manufacturing process. It’s recent 14th Gen CPUs such as the Core i5-14600K, were merely a refresh of its existing Raptor Lake-based 13th Gen models so Intel is overdue a new architecture. According to YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, Arrow Lake could be between 25-35 percent faster than its 14th gen desktop models.
