Alan Shearer dished out a rave review of Cole Palmer’s performance against Manchester City on Sunday and labelled the Chelsea forward as ‘superb and magnificent’ after scoring a stoppage time penalty.
Palmer’s late strike salvaged a deserved point for the Blues in a thrilling 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge as the youngster held his nerve late in the match to score the game’s final goal.
The former Man City star moved to Chelsea in a £42.5million summer transfer after deciding to leave the Etihad in search of more regular first-team opportunities.
He has since starred in his new surroundings by scoring four Premier League goals and registering two assists in just nine top-flight appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Newcastle and England legend Shearer marvelled at Palmer’s performance versus City and described the Chelsea winger as ‘magnificent’ after he produced a man of the match performance.
‘Very impressive Chelsea performance, Reece James was superb, Conor Gallagher, Raheem Sterling was incredible but 21-year-old Palmer was absolutely sensational,’ said Shearer on BBC Match of the Day 2.
‘One of the impressive things about him is he always tries to pass forward into forwards. His first thought is can he do that, can he run forward.
‘There was nothing short of it being magnificent when he had the ball. Offering himself when under pressure and then driving forward and setting Chelsea into really good positions.
‘He is 21 and been there for five minutes and is a regular and main players in that team he looks so confident.
‘When all this is going on with the penalty he is the calmest man in the stadium. No pressure at all for him. he was superb and magnificent.
‘It was a good deal for both parties, City and him, no way he would be a regular at City. They got good money for him,’ he added.
The Manchester-born rising star has thrived in his short Chelsea career but has become a mainstay in the team that is littered with huge money acquisitions.
Palmer is currently the preferred right-winger for Pochettino and is tasked with partnering a three-pronged attack alongside Nicolas Jackson and Raheem Sterling.
