Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s escort was involved in the accident in the district of Degerloch in Stuttgart, Germany, after Hungary beat Scotland in their Euro 2024 tie
The Prime Minister of Hungary was last night involved in a horrific car crash – which killed a police officer.
Viktor Orbán, 61, had a lucky escape after one of the motorbikes escorting the vehicle in which he was travelling collided with another car in the district of Degerloch in Stuttgart, Germany at around 11.15pm. He was being escorted to the airport after watching Hungary beat Scotland in their dramatic Euro 2024 tie.
A BMW, reportedly being driven by a 69-year-old woman, hit the motorcycle of a 61-year-old male officer who was accompanying Mr Orbán’s car. She failed to the junction had already been closed off by the police for Mr Orbán’s convoy at Albplatz, it is understood. The officer died in hospital, despite best efforts of doctors. A 27-year-old colleague suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital, says local media. The public prosecutor’s office and the Stuttgart police confirmed the horror collision in a statement today.
Police Chief Markus Eisenbraun said: “We are deeply shocked by the accident of our colleagues. The tragic circumstances of the death of our valued colleague have left us speechless and have hit the entire Stuttgart police force to the core.” The prime minister reportedly wanted to leave for Budapest, but the fatal accident occurred around eight kilometres before arriving at the airport. Ludwigsburg Police Headquarters have taken over the investigation and urged any witnesses to come forward.
Mr Orbán has been Hungary’s leader since May 2010, and previously held the office from 1998 to 2002. During Mr Orbán’s first term as prime minister, Hungary joined NATO. Mr Orbán was the Leader of the Opposition from 2002 to 2010. Since he was again elected in 2010, the father of five has had to deal with the 2013 amendments to the Constitution of Hungary, as well as the European migrant crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic in the nation.
