Home-made remedy to leave in your hair for 30 minutes for ‘good growth’

The beauty industry isn’t short of quick-fix solutions for lack-lustre hair. Many of the ingredients we need are available in nature, however.

Some claim that aloe vera supports better growth by promoting healthier scalp and follicles.

Though there is limited evidence that aloe vera can enhance the speed of hair growth, WebMD confirms that benefits exist.

“Researchers believe that aloenin, a chemical compound in the plant, is a primary factor in promoting hair growth, as found in people with a hair-loss condition called alopecia,” says WebMD.

“It has been used to improve hair health and lessen breakage, which contributes to hair growth.”

But the benefits don’t stop there. Anecdotal evidence suggests aloe vera can cut through grease and restore a healthy environment.

“Aloe vera has enzymes that break down fats and so strips your hair of any extra oil (sebum),” says WebMD.

Olivia Jones, Hair Stylist and Macleodbradley says this is why aloe vera is one of her favourite home-made remedies.

“My fave at-home remedies are aloe vera, onion juice and coconut oil,” the expert told GB News.

“Aloe contains proteolytic enzymes that repair dead skin cells on the scalp [and] act as a natural conditioner.

“With regular use, it can balance the pH levels of the scalps which [creates] a happy environment for good hair growth.

“If you have a plant at home, simply remove a leaf, scoop the get out and apply to both scalp and hair for up to 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.”

The gel can be applied directly onto the hair or scalp, working in the product with the hands.

“To help seal in the moisture, apply a few drops of castor oil and massage in,” recommends WebMD, confirming that 30 minutes is the optimal time to leave the treatment in.

Causes of hair thinning

Hair thinning has several causes, including modifiable factors like diet and lifestyle. Both factors affect the quality and growth of hair.

“[This] leads to poor quality of hair strands and a congested scalp with restricted blood flow to the follicle,” Jones explained.

Changes in the thickness may also reflect a depletion of hormones due to age, which hair treatment may not be able to tackle alone.
