Live London Underground updates as Balham station closed after fire on tracks causes chaos on Northern Line

A London Underground station in South London has been closed due to a fire alert this morning, Wednesday April 10. Balham Underground Station has been closed by Transport for London (TfL) following a fire alert.

This is causing severe delays on the Northern Line, with no service between Kennington and Morden at present. It’s also having a knock-on effect on the trains from Balham Railway Station into Central London, as the trains are much busier than normal.




London Buses, London Trams, Southern and South Western Railway are accepting tickets, TfL has said. The British Transport Police has been contacted for further information about this incident.

Part closure elsewhere on Northern Line

As well as the fire on the tracks at Balham this morning, the Northern Line has also been hit with planned part closures.

In an update this morning TfL said: NORTHERN LINE: Tuesday 2 until Thursday 11 April, no service between Golders Green and Edgware due to planned engineering works. Replacement buses will operate.

Replacement Buses will operate as follows:NL1 – Canons Park (for Jubilee line) – Edgware – Burnt Oak – Colindale – Hendon Central – Brent Cross (Golders Green Road) – Golders Green

Tube strikes expected this week

Tube strikes are going ahead after talks failed to resolve a dispute over pay, rail union TSSA confirmed. Members of the association will walk out tomorrow (Wednesday, April 10) and on Thursday, April 11.

Customer service managers will walk out from 12.01am to 11.59pm on both days. They are responsible for running stations. TSSA said that its members are concerned about potential changes to their terms and conditions, job roles and locations.

Northern line reopens in South London with severe delays

The Northern line has reopened in South London, according to TfL’s live travel map.

There are severe delays on the line as a result of the previous closure.

TfL say: “London Buses, London Trams, Southern and South Western Railway are accepting tickets.”

BTP called to track-side fire

The British Transport Police were called shortly before 8am to a small track-side fire, they have said.

In a statement, a spokesperson for BTP said: “Officers were called to Balham underground station at around 7.58am today (10 April) to reports of a small track side fire. London Fire Brigade also attended and the fire was extinguished.”
