3 Body Problem season 2: News and updates

A new sci-fi drama from the creators of Game of Thrones has landed on Netflix called 3 Body Problem, which follows a group of scientists who are attempting to unravel a mystery which threatens the future of earth as we know it.

It’s complex, confusing and ultimately addictive viewing, with the likes of Eiza González and John Bradley taking centre stage. The eight-part series landed in full on the 21st March, and is based on a series of books by Liu Cixin. But, will there be more episodes of 3 Body Problem, aka a second season of the show? Here’s what we know.

Has 3 Body Problem season 2 been confirmed?

While Netflix haven’t confirmed a second season of the show will 100% happen, the show’s creators David Benioff and DB Weiss have told Collider they’re already planning the storyline. “For season 2, we’ve got better than a rough idea,” they explained. “We’re much farther along with that plan than rough idea stages. From there on out it becomes, you know, the farther away things get the hazier your view of them is.

“But there, in the third book, there’s so many amazing landmarks, in terms of scenes and situations and events that we can see pretty clearly, that we know, we’re not completely sure how our characters are gonna get to that place, but we know they gotta get to that place. Because that place and that place and that place are the reason we pick these books up and wanted to adapt them in the first place.”

Sounds positive!

What could a 3 Body Problem season 2 be about?

The series is an adaptation of the first novel in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy by Liu Cixin, which was published in 2008, before being republished in English in 2014. The 3 Body Problem novel was followed by The Dark Forest, also released in 2008, and Death’s End which was published in 2010. So, fans can expect future series to follow the second and third book, if they were to be commissioned. The synopsis of the second book is:

“Imagine the universe as a forest, patrolled by numberless and nameless predators. In this forest, stealth is survival – any civilisation that reveals its location is prey. Earth has. Now the predators are coming.

“Crossing light years, the Trisolarians will reach Earth in four centuries’ time. But the sophons, their extra-dimensional agents and saboteurs, are already here. Only the individual human mind remains immune to their influence.

“This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a last-ditch defence that grants four individuals almost absolute power to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from human and alien alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown.

“Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he’s the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead.”

3 Body Problem is now streaming on Netflix.
