Midlands town where ancient STI rate is among highest in the country

A Midlands town has been named among the UK hotspots for an ancient sexually-transmitted infection, with dozens of recent cases reported. Data showed the towns and cities with the highest rates of syphilis cases, in terms of how many people live there.

And making the top 10 list was Walsall. Syphilis rates in the Black Country borough were among the highest in the country. There have been 66 cases there over recent months and Walsall has a syphilis rate of 23.21 per 100,000 residents.

It puts the borough in 10th place on the national list. Another Midlands area, Stoke-on-Trent, sits just above it on the list in 9th.

Health experts are now increasing awareness about the STI, its symptoms and how it is spread. The syphilis hotspot is Brighton and Hove, followed by Salford and Middlesbrough, according to the data. Navin Khosla, pharmacist at NowPatient, said: “Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can be contracted through unprotected sex with someone who’s infected.

“This includes vaginal, anal and oral sex as the infection is spread through direct contact with the infected ulcers which can develop on the penis, vagina, anus and inside of the mouth. Symptoms can take three weeks to appear and include the following:

  • Small sores on the penis, vagina, around the anus, and/or in the mouth

  • White/grey wart-like growths in the genital region

  • A rash on the palms of the hands and soles of feet

  • White patches in mouth

  • Flu-like symptoms; high temperature, headaches, fatigue

  • Swollen glands

  • Hair loss

The pharmacist continued: “If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or think you are at risk of having an STI, contact your GP for an appointment, or visit a community contraceptive service or local genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic to get tested. This test will include a swab of the infected sores and a potential blood test to determine the presence of the STI.
