A community is in mourning after the shocking death of a teenager who was killed during a ‘workplace accident.’
Emergency services descended on a usually quiet industrial estate on Tile Street in Bury on Thursday morning (February 8) after police were notified of the horror incident.
Paramedics, police and fire crews all attended, but sadly, 17-year-old Oliver Mawdsley, from Moorside, Bury, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Since news of his tragic death broke, tributes have poured in for the youngster. His death has left the local Bury community reeling.

Posting on Facebook, Craig Suzanne Mawdsley said: “Our nephew Oliver. Our hearts are broken. R.I.P and fly high xxx.” Charlie Lou Mawdsley wrote: “My little cousin. Forever will be in our hearts our Ollie.”
Messages from others who knew Oliver have also been left. Leanne Appleton wrote: “Oliver you are going to be missed out hearts are broken such an amazing boy growing into an amazing young man with a bright future. We love you xxx”.
Greg Bradbury wrote: “Fly high Oliver. You was a good lad.” Kelly Marie Pochin said: “Rest in peace Oliver you was truly an amazing lovely lad xx”
Llorenna Hodgkinson wrote: “Until we meet again Oliver. Such an amazing person took far too soon forever in my heart.”
Amy Beckford said: “Our family friends I just can’t get my head round it. From family meals, to holidays to parties and lots of laughs. I’m so gutted it hurts.” Max Turner added: “Rip big lad till we meet again.”
Following the incident, a 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and gross negligence manslaughter. A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
No further updates have since been released. A joint investigation is underway between Greater Manchester Police detectives and the Health and Safety Executive.
In a statement issued yesterday, a spokesperson for GMP said: “At around 10.10am today (Thursday 8 February 2024), officers were called to reports of concerns for welfare at a business premises on Tile Street, Bury.
“It was established that a 17-year-old boy was involved in a workplace accident and despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
“A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and gross negligence manslaughter and a 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
“A joint investigation between GMP Bury CID and the Health and Safety Executive has been launched to make enquiries into the circumstances that led to the boy’s death. Enquiries are ongoing at this stage.”
