Manchester City has agreed a deal to sign FC Barcelona target Savio this summer according to transfer market Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian reported that the Abu Dhabi-backed Champions League holders had reached an agreement to buy the talented Brazilian from Girona, though this isn’t quite accurate.
Savio is currently owned by French Ligue 2 outfit Troyes and actually on loan with the Catalans.
With all three clubs in question falling under the City Football Group umbrella, however, some could argue “same difference”.
Savio was Troyes’ record signing in 2022, but will probably never make a single appearance for them after immediately being loaned out to Girona and now bound for northwest England in July.
Romano explained that the documents to finalize the purchase will be signed “in the next few days”.
“Despite bids from German and English clubs, Savio will join Manchester City,” Romano tweeted, adding that the 19-year-old is “now 100% focused on Girona to end the season in the best way”.
His 2023/2024 campaign could conclude with Savio, also known as Savinho, crowned a La Liga champion.
Tied with Toni Kroos on seven, Savinho currently co-leads the Spanish top flight in assists which have helped his team mount an unlikely title race challenge with the German’s Real Madrid side as their main rivals.
Girona and Real Madrid face off at the Bernabeu next Saturday, in a mammoth clash that could decide who succeeds Barca as the kings of Spain.
One of Savio’s assists came in a 4-2, December demolition of Xavi Hernandez’s men which was Girona’s maiden win against their regional neighbors.
Savinho also has five goals in the league this term, one of which came in a similar first ever triumph over Atletico Madrid.
Even before that showdown at the Montjuic Stadium where Barca were left to lick their wounds outplayed and outclassed, they had been reported as interested in Savio by outlets such as SPORT.
The newspaper said that he was their “goal” for 2024, but the Blaugrana has once again been trumped at the negotiation table by City.
This latest disappointment comes after River Plate prodigy Claudio Echeverri also decided to take his next career steps at the Etihad above interest from Barca, who are simply unable to compete financially with Premier
