Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly held talks over becoming the next manager of the Sweden national team.

The Norwegian was interviewed by the Swedish Football Association in December and is one of several names in the frame.

Janne Andersson resigned back in November after Sweden failed to qualify for Euro 2024.

Solskjaer, 50, hasn’t taken on another job since United sacked him in November 2021 but has subsequently turned down offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and was linked with Besiktas in Turkey.

Swedish news outlet Fotbollskanalen report the former striker was interested in their national team job but the association will take their time over the appointment.

Solskjaer never played or coached in Sweden but has a good knowledge of Scandinavian football having previously coached at Molde in his homeland.

A club legend as a player, Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho in December 2018, initially on a caretaker basis at Old Trafford.

But results were so positive he was given the United job permanently in March 2019. He took the team to the Europa League final in 2021, as well as a second-place Premier League finish.

However, he was fired after a run of poor results early in the 2021-22 campaign.

In an interview with The Athletic in September, Solskjaer said: ‘I’ve had offers. Most recently, two from Saudi Arabia.

‘My best mate, who is also my agent, sifts through them. If you’ve managed Man United, you put your own criteria about what you want to work with. I love England and the Premier League.

Former Sweden player Olof Mellberg and Australia women’s coach Tony Gustavsson were the frontrunners for the Sweden job but talks broke down.
