Sally Nugent was forced to host BBC Breakfast by herself on New Year’s Day – leaving the sofa looking rather empty without a usual co-star.
The broadcaster, 52, most commonly fronts the morning news show with Jon Kay from Monday to Wednesday.
However, for the New Year’s Day programme on Monday, neither Jon, 54, nor any of the alternative male presenters such as Ben Thompson were anywhere to be seen to make a typical duo.
Going solo, Sally’s brief covered a range of topics from the earthquake in Japan, to the latest on the war in Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Gaza.
The journalist was not totally alone, with colleagues on hand for the usual sport, weather and business bulletins.
Ben Boulos was in the studio to discuss the latest from the city and the energy price cap, John Watson was also on hand with the latest sports news and Matt Taylor with the weather.
They were rewarded for their work over the New Year with kind messages from loyal viewers perhaps fighting off hangovers in front of the early programming.
Many of them where directed at the show’s figurehead, with Sally bombarded by well-wishes and thanks.
Some of those who tuned in posted on X: ‘Morning @sallynugent @BenMBoulos @JohnWatsonSport @MetMattTaylor and Happy New Year!…
‘Happy new year Sally, I hope it brings you everything you wish for…
‘Good morning Sally. Happy New Year to you. Thank you for bringing us the news so early in the mornings…
‘Wishing you a very Happy New Year Sally, hope you have a wonderful 2024.’
