Piers Morgan has poked fun at Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after Cristiano Ronaldo posted a picture of himself and Conor McGregor on Instagram.
The Portuguese footballing sensation and UFC superstar were seen sitting next to eachother during the ‘Day of Reckoning’ boxing event in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night.
McGregor and Ronaldo were seen chatting and joking during the evening, as Anthony Joshua claimed an emphatic victory against Otto Wallin, while Deontay Wilder was beaten by Joseph Parker via a unanimous decision.
Afterwards Ronaldo posted a picture of him and McGregor in hysterics on his Instagram, stating: ‘Best caption wins!’
Morgan, who had interviewed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner before his departure from Man United in 2022, subsequently took to Instagram to offer his caption, writing: ‘Remember when Ten Hag said I was the problem at Man United…’
It was well documented that Ronaldo and the Dutch manager had not seen eye to eye during his final months at Old Trafford, with the 38-year-old admitting that he had ‘no respect for Ten Hag’.
‘I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me,’ Ronaldo said before going on to claim that he felt betrayed by the manager.
‘Some people, they don’t want me here – not only the coach but the other two or three guys. Not only this year, but last year too.
‘Honestly, I shouldn’t say that. But listen, I don’t care. People should listen to the truth. Yes, I feel betrayed.’
Some close to the club had even said that Ten Hag had to ‘dodge mines’ laid by Ronaldo during his first few months at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo’s contract was ‘mutually terminated’ in November 2022 with the former Real Madrid Star subsequently movng to play for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League on an eye-watering £175million-a-year deal.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag went on to guide United to their first piece of silverware in six years, yet, he admitted he had felt like Ronaldo had stabbed him in the back, claiming after the winger said that he didn’t want to stay at United during his bombshell interview with Morgan.
‘In the summer we had one talk. He came in and said, “I will tell you in seven days if I want to stay”. Then he came back and said, “I want to stay,”’ The Dutchman said.
‘Until that moment (the interview) I never heard anything. He never told me, “I want to leave”.
‘The interview I think, as a club, you can’t accept. There will be consequences. To make that step, he knew the consequences.’
Despite that, questions have been asked over whether the Dutchman is reckless or rutheless, having gotten rid of Ronaldo, David de Gea and ostracising Jadon Sancho.
United have endured a torrid start to the Premier League this season, dropping to eighth in the table, with pressure now mounting on Ten Hag after his side have suffered eight defeats in the Premier League while also crashing out of the Champions League.
