A man has died and a second man has been seriously injured following a gun attack in west Dublin on Sunday evening.

The dead man, in his 20s, is believed to be one of the gunmen and appears to have sustained fatal stab wounds in scenes that saw families run for cover in a packed steakhouse, RTE reports.

The latest gangland gun attack took place at Browne’s Steakhouse just after 8pm as customers, including families with children, were dining out on Christmas Eve, the publication reports.

Frightened parents were said to have fled the building, carrying young children.

It is understood gardai are investigating whether the dead man was tackled in the aftermath.

The two injured men were taken to Connolly Hospital for treatment.

The man who was fatally injured was pronounced dead in hospital.

Gardai have not confirmed the nature of the fatal injuries he sustained.

The second man, aged in his 40s, was treated for gunshot wounds.

He was said to be in a serious condition in hospital on Sunday evening.

A father and son who were also in the restaurant and known to gardai were the targets of a gunman who arrived and fired several shots at them as customers screamed and ran, RTE reports.

Videos shared online appear to show people in the restaurant ducking and someone else running for cover.

Both victims are known to gardai for their involvement in serious and organised crime, RTE reports.

Detectives are treating the shooting as gang-related and believe it is linked to an ongoing drugs and gun-related feud, the publication reports.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and the services of the Office of the State Pathologist have been requested.
