A 23-year-old man has died after being buried in sand on an Australian island, police have said.

Josh Taylor was at a campsite on Bribie Island in Queensland when he fell into a large hole on a beach and became trapped on Saturday.

He was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he died from his injuries on Thursday, Queensland Police said.

The force is investigating the incident and has urged witnesses or anyone who might have footage to come forward.

Mr Taylor was with friends at the beach when he fell into the hole, which is believed to have been dug to roast a pig in, according to Australian broadcaster ABC.

He was buried in the sand and could not be pulled out for some time, it reported.
