A Metro service is at a stand still after a vehicle crashed into a bridge in Jarrow.
The Tyne and Wear Metro is currently suspended in both directions between Pelaw and Brockley Whins after a vehicle struck a railway bridge in the Fellgate area. The service remains at a stand.
The incident is understood to have happened at some point after 11am on Saturday. Due to the ongoing Go North East bus strikes, those travelling on the Metro in the area are being urged to seek alternative arrangements as few bus services are operating.
A statement from the Tyne and Wear Metro said: “Network Rail staff are currently investigating a vehicle striking a railway bridge in the Fellgate area. Due to this the service is currently at a stand between Pelaw and Brockley Whins.”
It added: “The service remains suspended in both directions between Pelaw and Brockley Whins. Network Rail are currently inspecting the bridge. Due to local bus strikes, customers travelling in the area may need to seek alternative arrangements.”
Tickets and passes can be used on Stagecoach service 18 which operates in either direction between Brockley Whins and South Shields. Due to the industrial action few buses are operating in the area.
