On Tuesday evening (November 14), hundreds of people were forced to evacuate a Bristol tower block after structural problems were discovered. Bristol City Council officials asked all tenants to leave immediately “as a precautionary measure” while inspections are carried out.
It was reported that a survey showed three of the 98 flats at Barton House, in the Redfield area, are a “risk to the structure of the block” in the event of a fire, explosion or large impact. A major incident was declared and 400 residents were ordered to leave the building.
The tenants were told to stay with friends or relatives if possible. The remainder were sent to a temporary rest centre at the Tawfiq Masjid & Centre mosque where beds, food and drink was provided.
The situation left residents confused and upset. Sheila Barrett, who has lived there for 50 years, said: “I’ve just got to go now and get some clothes and things. I was speaking to a friend of mine in there and she has nowhere to go.
“There’s another lady who has her dog and her rabbit, she’s really worried about what she’s going to do. She can’t take her dog into a hotel room.”
Another resident called David said his ceiling collapsed. He said: “I ain’t got a clue (where I’ll go). I’ve picked up my bags which is the most important thing.”
