We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: Vanillaware doesn’t miss. The Japanese developer behind fantastic titles like 13 Sentinels, Dragon’s Crown, and Odin Sphere is currently putting the finishing touches on its next game, Unicorn Overlord. The fantasy RPG was announced back in September, and it’s set to release on the 8th March.
Admittedly, we’re already sold. New details on Unicorn Overlord have dropped, revealing that the game will feature over 60 recruitable characters and a dynamic world that you’re free to traverse in between main story battles.
“Explore the vast overworld at your leisure, encountering various quests and events. Fight against enemies, liberate and rebuild captured settlements, and prepare your forces to advance even further,” reads the official press release.
So, you’ll be marching your army around a world map, capturing territories, and reaping the rewards as you go — all while levelling up your favourite fighters. You’ll also be able to try your hand at an ore-mining minigame, apparently.
As for the game’s lore, the press release goes pretty in-depth. “The story takes place on the continent of Fevrith, once comprised of five nations: Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias, and Albion. However, the reborn Zenoiran Empire led by Galerius now dominates the entire continent,” it reads. Where would we be without an evil, all-conquering empire to take down?
What’s more, we’ve been handed a boatload of fresh screenshots:
